      <image:title>Projects - Howe Sound House</image:title>
<image:caption>West Vancouver - 2025 6,480 sf Single Family Home with Secondary Suite and 3 Car Garage. As the name suggests, The Howe Sound House is located on the majestic shore of the Howe Sound, a network of beautiful fjords immediately northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The property is narrow and steep with a creek flowing along the south side which informs much of the project’s siting. A circulation path, along the north side of the property, connects the top of the property where trains glide by to the bottom of the property where a boat ramp is located. The project consists of a single-family dwelling, attached secondary suite, and attached 3-car Garage. The Primary Suite occupies the upper floor with main living spaces, Entry, and Secondary Suite on the main floor and additional bedrooms and Media room at the basement floor. Each level steps back from the water, providing roof decks that span the entire width of the building, providing access to outside and expansive views of the Sound. A vertical screen on both sides of the decks helps to maintain privacy from the nearby houses on either side while providing views and light. A pair of steel stairs lead one from the Main floor deck to the terraces and boat ramp below. The Main Entry, a dramatic double storey space, is illuminated by a large skylight and accessed from an exterior courtyard at the main level, surrounded by mature cedars and native west coast plantings. The Garage is located on the upper floor to reduce the slope of the driveway and leads to an interior bridge that passes through the main Entry where an elevator servicing the building’s 3 levels is located. The Secondary suite, located on the main level behind the main living spaces and below the Garage, is accessed by a private entrance along the north circulation path. Despite rigorous planning requirements and significant geotechnical challenges, the project appears nestled into the landscape as though it was meant to be there. <image:title>Projects - Off-Grid Coastal Retreat</image:title>
<image:caption>Egmont BC - 2025 967 sf cabin renovation with addition Perched on a rocky knoll overlooking the vast expanse of Jervis Inlet, this off-grid retreat was created for a client seeking a quiet escape from the intensity of urban life and a demanding career. What began as a small, weathered cabin has gradually transformed into a self-sufficient sanctuary deeply connected to its coastal landscape. Reached by a secluded logging road, the retreat feels immediately removed from daily routines. At its centre is the original cabin, carefully renovated and paired with a new addition that rearranges the existing spaces to provide dedicated kitchen, dining, living and bedroom. The design preserves the modest character of the existing structure while elevating comfort, functionality, and craft. A series of outdoor spaces extend the experience outward: a firepit, pizza oven, dining terrace, and a generous deck with an outdoor kitchen oriented toward the inlet. Nearby, a geodesic dome shelters a greenhouse thriving with tropical plants, creating a lush counterbalance to the rugged coastal surroundings. Additional elements, including small sleeping cabins, a utility building, dock, and boat ramp, support a resort-like yet low-impact lifestyle. Designed to operate fully off-grid, the retreat is powered by a solar energy system, heated by a wood-burning fireplace, and supported by well water and a septic system. The result is a place where the comforts of home blend seamlessly with the rhythms of nature. A hand-carved totem pole stands opposite the entry, grounding the site in the client’s cultural heritage and anchoring the arrival experience. Inside, a dark, natural palette and finely detailed interiors create a calm, de-stimulating atmosphere suited to rest, reflection, and connection. This project embodies Woven’s commitment to thoughtful, place-responsive design, crafting spaces that invite presence, slow living, and a meaningful relationship with the land. <image:title>Projects - Layer House</image:title>
<image:caption>Willis Point, BC Canada - 2025 The clients, a visual artist and craftsperson, envisioned a home that balances intimacy with openness, providing spaces for retreat, creativity, and connection with accessibility in mind. They purchased a steep, sloping waterfront property above a busy section of Saanich Inlet and engaged Woven Architecture and Design to design a home accommodating their diverse needs. Perched on a forested slope, Layer House quietly observes the shifting light and rhythms of the landscape and marine traffic below. The 5,100-square-foot home unfolds across two levels, accompanied by a 1,300-square-foot accessory building connected via a bridge. Arrival occurs on the upper level, where the primary bedroom, living, and dining areas frame sweeping views of the inlet. Expansive glazing draws the forest and water into daily life, while natural materials anchor the home in its surroundings. Below, two guest rooms, an office, gym, and sauna open onto wraparound decks and an outdoor terrace with a hot tub and shower—spaces for restoration and quiet reflection. Across the bridge, the accessory building supports artistic pursuits, with a studio above and a woodshop below. This separation of work and living spaces allows creativity to unfold in harmony with the landscape. Every room opens outward, inviting the forest, water, and sky into daily experience, and the architecture steps gently with the terrain, dissolving the boundary between dwelling and nature. Sustainability is central to the home’s design. Nestled into the hillside, the structure benefits from the earth’s stable thermal mass, improving energy efficiency and comfort year-round. High-performance glazing, thermally broken doors, and well-insulated assemblies minimize heat loss while maximizing natural light and passive solar gain. A rainwater harvesting system collects and filters roof runoff for irrigation and non-potable use, reducing municipal water demand. Durable, low-maintenance materials—locally sourced wood, concrete, and metal—ensure longevity and allow the home to age gracefully within its environment. Layer House becomes both shelter and observatory—an immersive dialogue between home, craft, and the elemental beauty of Saanich Inlet.
